Steal the blame, share the credit.

Credit flies down. Blame stops here.

When something works, the team did it. When it doesn't, you did. The opposite (taking credit and deflecting blame) is the fastest way to dispirit the team.

The instinct to claim a win is human.

The discipline is to feed it to whoever did the work.

  1. 01Public-facing wins: someone else's name. Public-facing screw-ups: yours.
  2. 02In external writeups, name the team. In internal postmortems, start with what you owned.
  3. 03If you find yourself drafting ‘I’ in a client email about a team win, change it to ‘we’ and name the person.
  4. 04Compliments flow down. Heat absorb up.
